Located on the ground floor of a new building and occupying a surface of 1400 square meters, the nusery and childcare centre has a capacity of 96 (72 children for the kindergarten and 24 for the childcare centre). The project deals with this important number of children by trying to divide the space into small units based on the children’s scale. Each unit is organized around volumes that sequence the space and opens up onto the garden located at the centre of the plot. Simplicity and homogeneity guided the work on the interior spaces which are light and luminous. The spaces for children are organized in a fan-like disposition to optimize their access to the garden. Large glass walls separate the different units so as to encourage visual communication between units; in the lower parts of these glass walls is furniture for the use of the children. In contrast, the white volumes are more opaque. They include areas for resting and storage. The part dedicated to personnel, to technical necessities and to the kitchen isolates the children’s spaces from the street. The principle circulation route in the kindergarten or its “spine” is marked by colored islands, visual openings and natural light. At the southern end, the activity zone is shared by both entities as well as a games’ room and a pool turned towards the garden.
